Re: lib-ir: Needs for Scholars Bank: backup/validation procedures

A good starting point for this kind of documentation can be found in the documentation of CONTENTdm backup procedures, posted to the MIG list in May 2004:

http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~catdept/meta-data/msg00097.html

The sections on tape and incremental backups have been applicable to Scholars' Bank since we managed to free up a backup license to devote to IR backup.  I can investigate a bit further to determine whether the cycle of tape re-use parallels what is done for libweb and ambrosia, but I suspect it does.

The only real difference is that there is an additional step involving an SQL dump from the database.  This is because databases don't back up well.  The dump can be thought of as a snapshot of the database that can used to recreate the database structure and content from scratch.  These files are also generated for use in transferring Scholars' Bank data to irtest, our DSpace development instance.

OIA exports are made from the collection periodically as well, but they are stored locally on my desktop.  I don't see much utility in storing these in a more permanent or stable location, as they are considerably less useful than the SQL dumps.

There are a couple of things I'd like us to get a handle on
regarding our backup procedures:

1) I'd like to document what we are currently doing regarding
backup of the files and the metadata in SB. Corey knows
what these steps are and has told me a couple of times.
Now, it needs to be written up. This needs to start with Corey.
It doesn't need to be polished writing at this point. Just the
facts, as they say.

2) Once it's written, the IRG group needs to review and
decide if it's adequate. If not, we need to decide
what steps we need to take to make it adequate.

3) We need to document what we are doing for checking
on the integrity of the files. What else do we need to
be doing? Again, this will start with Corey and then
entail review by the group.

Other thoughts?
