lib-ir: needs for Scholars' Bank
Last week, I attended the DELOS Summer School on
Digital Preservation in Digital Libraries held in
Sophia Antipolis, France (just outside Antibes). The
course lasted 5 1/2 days and reinforced some
information that Corey and I got last year when we
attended a weeklong workshop on digital preservation
at Cornell, as well as adding a lot of new information.
For a breakdown of the sessions and the instructors,
take a look at:
http://www.dpc.delos.info/ss05/DELOS_DPC_SummerSchool2005_finaloutline.pdf
I was fortunate not only to hear from some of the world
leaders in the field, but also to interact with them on a very
informal level, as each presenter also took part in all
the sessions, discussions, and exercises. Other participants
were from England, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, Estonia,
Finland, Croatia, Spain, Korea, Japan, the Nethelands, Denmark,
etc.
Which brings me to some glaring needs for Scholars'
Bank (which we really all know already but perhaps
need to focus on a bit more.)
In order for us to become a Trusted Digital Repository
(TDR), we need to do a number of things. One thing
we need to do is a better job of documenting our policies
and practices. I'd like to add a series of pages on our
policies and practices regarding: selection, ingest,
backup and preservation, and metadata, among other
things. In some cases, we actually need to make
some active rather than passive policy decisions.
I'm going to begin working on some of these things.
However, I'll need help from the rest of you, both for some
of the content of these pages, as well as review of
whatever is drafted and how it's presented.
I'll shortly be sending out some more messages addressing
specific issues. I'll try not to overwhlem us but I also don't
want to lose the focus I gained from the workshop.
