lib-ir: possible communities for SB

I think we need to think broadly about the academic purpose of the IR and also be flexible to take advantage of opportunities.  Barb

Two communities being proposed by Admin:

1) Andrew Bonamici has had discussions with Chris
Ramey from University Planning about the possibility
of setting up a collection for the UO Planning
Office for major documents such as the Long Range
Plan. (This discussion got started because
Chris was excited to find one of the PPPM
terminal projects in SB.)

2) Mark Watson has had some discussions with
Paul Slovic of Decision Research
http://www.decisionresearch.org/About/
about including their working papers and
reports in SB. They do research into
questions about human judgment, information
processing, and risk perception. Many of the
people affiliated with Decision Research
are UO faculty; others are not. Mark and I
are meeting with Paul soon to discuss this
further.

As we've moved forward with SB, our vision
for it has evolved. Initially, we were looking
at it as an archive for UO faculty research.
Then we expanded it to UO research, from
faculty, staff. or students. Then we expanded it
also to include materials that support the
academic mission of the University, such
as some materials from University Archives
and Special Collections. Both of the above
proposals could be construed to fit into
our wider vision for SB. I'm game to
at least consider them. It seems to me
that if we find a market for this service,
even if it's not the one we originally
envisioned, we should explore it.

What do the rest of you think?
