The answer is yes that some work has been used for a published article.
For example, Marc Schlossberg has worked with Adam Zimmerman to get an article
published in Local Environment based on his thesis. It usually comes about as
a result of the professors' initiative (and knowledge of the publishing
process). So, it could be a concern for some. I don't know that this would
discourage publication in a journal, but we could notify students about this
to give them to the option to reject (or delay) web publishing. I can raise
the issue with the faculty.

learned that Ohio State has run into a situation where Graduate Students are
resisting making their work available online, for fear that it hurts their
chances of publishing their work later on in a scholarly print
journal.
The IR group
would like to address these issues early on to try and avoid
these difficulties.
