Overall, we should probably take the positions
that it's important to as that students not have their pub options limited, but that

Here is PPPM's response to JQ's question about publishable Exit Projects. I will follow up with Rich and see if he could survey the department and get some more faculty input into this issue.

Andrew,
The answer is yes that some work has been used for a published article. For example, Marc Schlossberg has worked with Adam Zimmerman to get an article published in Local Environment based on his thesis. It usually comes about as a result of the professors' initiative (and knowledge of the publishing process). So, it could be a concern for some. I don't know that this would discourage publication in a journal, but we could notify students about this to give them to the option to reject (or delay) web publishing. I can raise the issue with the faculty.

Hi Rich,

The Institutional Repositories group would like to know if any of the PPPM Exit Projects which have been submitted in the past have been later published in scholarly journals. Do you know if any of the department is tracking on any of this activity?

We have learned that Ohio State has run into a situation where Graduate Students are resisting making their work available online, for fear that it hurts their chances of publishing their work later on in a scholarly print journal.

The IR group would like to address these issues early on to try and avoid these difficulties.

Thanks,
Andrew

Thanks for your continued interest in the Institutional Repository pilot
project. The Institutional Repository Group appreciates your interest and I
believe we can both benefit from archiving your digital scholarly materials.
I would like to schedule a meeting for next week to continue our
discussions. Would May 6th at 10am work for people? If not, let me know and
I can schedule another time on May 6th or 7th. I had thought that we could
meet in the Knight Library in the Document Center.

Let me know if you have further questions,

Andrew
