lib-ir: observations on dspace
1/ One issue that was raised at the PPPM meeting yesterday that I now have
an answer to: it is not possible in the current release of dspace to upload
a multi-file website and have it browseable. This feature is planned for a
future release.
So, for instance, if you upload an item that consists of an HTML file and
associated image files, relative links in the HTML file will not work so the
HTML file will not be directly usable (images won't display properly). Of
course, absolute links (to files outside of dspace) will still work fine).
2/ There's a new version of dspace scheduled for release "real soon now",
probably in the next few days. It will include major changes throughout the
system.
3/ In discussions with Juanita we've concluded that I probably went a bit
too far in mirroring the libweb headers/footers on our dspace site. In
particular, the popup menus don't seem to be very appropriate for the
institutional repository site, and many of the navigation items aren't
either (e.g. the dspace site has a "live help" button but I'd be surprised
if answerland consultants could help with dspace; there are "site index" and
"search" buttons that index LIBWEB rather than all of the library's various
websites). Advice needed on how to modify the header and footer for
applications like dspace or other digital collections.
