lib-ir: 4 items about dspace

1/ oai service provider

We now have an OAI service provider at
http://ir.uoregon.edu:8080/dspace-oai (URL may change when I implement
better security). I don't have good tools for testing this yet, though.
Carol, are you able to help?

When I tried the OAI tester at
http://oai.dlib.vt.edu/cgi-bin/Explorer/2.0-1.45/testoai I observed that
it was complaining that I was replying with an invalid response to a
verb=Identify request:
[Error] filejG0yhr:1:693: Datatype error: In element 'deletedRecord' :
Value 'yes' must be one of [no, persistent, transient].
[Error] filejG0yhr:1:1362: The content of element type "toolkit" must
match "(title?,author?,version?,toolkitIcon?,URL?)".

The second of these errors looks like a bug in the explorer not our site
(if you look at the actual XML by visiting
http://ir.uoregon.edu:8080/dspace-oai?verb=Identify you see that we do
have what appear to be the right children in toolkit), but the first
might be an indication that our site isn't quite protocol-compliant.

At some point in the near future (after we have some content) we will
register our service provider with OAI.

2/ handle server

We now have a handle server running. Our CNRI prefix is 1794. I was a
bit confused by minor version numbers, and I had to wipe out and rebuild
the UO Libraries community to fix this. Moral: we need to be confident
that things mostly work before we start accepting any items.

3/ disk space

Our current DSpace implementation has about 5GB available for
submissions. That's not a huge amount of space, depending on the sizes
of the items. I'm hoping to be able to get through the pilot project
phase without changing servers. I propose that as we undertake pilot
projects we manage expectations of our clients and warn them that the
maximum amount of storage we can provide as part of any one pilot
project is 500MB.

4/ site appearance

You may have noticed if you visited our archive recently that it now
largely mimics the appearance of libweb. I don't propose to make many
other changes in appearance for a while, though I do think that I might
eliminate the homepage (http://ir.uoregon.edu) so that following that
link would take you directly to dspace; this would imply a committment
not to use the ir server for anything except dspace (right now, for
instance, it's used both for dspace and as a place to hold a local copy
of the dspace documentation).
