lib-ir: a sample faculty response
Here's a summary of one faculty member's response to my questions.
Faculty member: Jennifer Freyd, Psychology
- are you personally doing any web based publication?
Yes, lots of self publication. Reprints of scholarly publications where
she can obtain permission from the publisher. Author (preprint) copies of
other publications, e.g. letters to editor. Preprints (usually restricted
access; offered for comment by colleagues before submission). Works in
progress and concept papers (some of which will become preprints).
Simulations and demonstrations. Measures (what Juanita calls "psychological
tests") developed in Freyd's lab. Grad seminar reading/reference lists that
turn out to be extremely popular as bibliographies for other scholars in the
field.
Has also participated in online peer reviewed publication (some journals
are moving to online publication with an annual hardcopy for library
archival purposes).
Also is planning to use the web to conduct an online survey
- who else in your department should we be talking to?
No really good ideas, but notes that Lew Goldberg [one of the 2 or 3 best
known members of the UO Psych faculty] maintains a large collection of open
access psychological measures available on the web. [aside: Freyd was quite
surprised that his site, http://ipip.ori.org, was not mentioned on our
Psychological Tests page]
- what are the impediments to doing this and what kinds of services would
you like to see on campus to make this easier?
Overall positive towards the idea of having Library do something. "I want
people to read my work" so anything that contributes to that is a good
thing. Concern over authenticity. Notes that web pages change frequently
and that a citation that includes date referenced isn't very useful if the
page will be updated before the reader has a chance to follow the citations;
likes the idea of a library with version control that would alleviate this
problem. Somewhat interested in deposit of scientific data, particularly
data collected by graduate students in her lab.
- are there any preprint archives that you’re contributing to or using?
Has contributed to Psyprints, but this is not a major force in psychology.
(she asked about gossip on what Harnad is doing now that he has left BBS).
- are there grant-related issues in your area, e.g. policies on data
deposit, that would be affected by a library repository? How about journal
copyright issues?
Journal prior-publication restrictions is a concern for preprints
Confidentiality restrictions on human subjects data may make deposit
unfeasible in many cases
- what’s going on in your discipline in this area? does your department or
institute produce tech reports? are the professional organizations in your
discipline active in this area?
Freyd is of the opinion that it is inevitable that all Psychology journals
will go completely on line in the near future. She notes that APA is a
leader in online journals.
Department does produce tech reports, but only occasionally. One of the UO
institutes she participates in, Inst. of Cognitive and Decision Sciences,
produces numerous tech reports each year and would be a natural candidate
for IR (see http://hebb.uoregon.edu/techreports.html). Both department and
institutes publish online newsletters that include scholarly content.
- what formats are you using for materials that you make available on line?
PDF for journal articles when available
text (HTML) for reprints of non-peer reviewed publications (e.g. letters to
editor), measures, etc.
HTML plus images for many web publications (some HTML documents include
embedded javascript, but she steers clear of most "advanced" delivery
formats)
data is occasionally made available as an excel spreadsheet
data on her web server is often stored in a SQL database (note key
distinction between the storage format and the delivery format)
