Recommended Library Serials Budget

The information presented below has been manually retyped by the Library Committee chair (P.Gilkey) so transcription errors are possible. Cuts from Area Studies and Library General are not presented; when the totals from these items are included, the total reductions in Serials are approximately $500,000. The reduction is to be phased in over 3 years so BUDGET-CUT comparison with other budget figures and does not represent an actual budget figure. The levels of reductions have been based on ARL inflation rates over the past 5 years; they have been averaged across broad disciplinary categories of library materials which support the 3 divisions of CAS as well as the professional schools; 21.7 for the social sciences, 22.8 for the sciences; 16.9% for the humanities. Certain funds are to be reduced less than these percentages to ensure that the Budget-Cut figure does not go below the 90-91 Budget figures. These funds are marked with *; the shortfall will be made up using library contingency funds 1995).

After determining the percentages to reduce for the three broad areas, the Library could estimate what individual budget lines would be following the serials cancellation. Using the 1990/91 expenditures as a benchmark, the Library then adjusted these percentages. In this way, the Library responded to the concern that no individual budget lines be less than equal to 1990/91 expenditures after the reduction in titles. General library funds will consume the difference, approximately $14,000, so that 1) remaining individual budget lines do not bear the burden of an additional reduction, and 2) the Library may meet its overall target amount of $500,000.
