Access to ScienceDirect Unsubscribed Journals

To obtain the full text of an article in a ScienceDirect journal marked as "unsubscribed" , you must create an individual account with ScienceDirect that establishes your affiliation with the University of Oregon. ScienceDirect confirms this affiliation by looking at the computer address (IP address) of the workstation where the account is created. ScienceDirect recognizes only computers that are physically on the UO campus or that are logged into the campus network with the client VPN (virtual private network) software. Articles in unsubscribed journals are provided free of charge to current UO students, faculty and staff. Assistance is available through email or by phone, 346-1818.

Here are the steps to create your ScienceDirect account from off-campus. Please print these instructions to refer to as you create your account.

1. Download the client VPN software. You will need to provide your uoregon username and password.
   
   
2. Once you have download the VPN software, you will need to install it on your computer. On a Windows computer, the client VPN software is usually in your Program Files folder, in a folder called Cisco Systems VPN Client.
   
   
3. After the software has been installed, open the client VPN software, then click on the Connect icon. For easy access in the future, put a shortcut on your desktop for the client VPN software.
   
   
4. When you connect to the client VPN, you will need your Duck ID and your password.
   
   
5. You will receive confirmation that you have successfully logged in.
   
   You can also look for the lock in the tool tray in the bottom right corner of your monitor.
   
   
6. You are now ready to create your account with ScienceDirect. On the ScienceDirect Web site, look for the "Not Registered?" link in the upper right corner of the browser window.
   
   
7. When the registration process is complete, ScienceDirect will assign you a username. During the registration process, you will have created your own password. It is important to remember these because you will need them each time you want to obtain an article from an unsubscribed title.
   
   
8. Do not log into your ScienceDirect account until you have displayed the citation information about the article you need.
   
   
9. Locate the ScienceDirect article you need for your research. You can view citation and abstract, but if you want to look at "Abstract + References" or get the full text of an article. You will be asked to login:
   
   
   
10. Once you have logged in successfully, ScienceDirect will indicate that the article you requested is not covered by the UO Libraries' subscription, but that access is covered by the library's agreement for payment. Simply click on the Continue button to obtain the article.
