Printing in the Library

Science Library - Science Color / XP

To add the Science Color (HP 3800) printer to your XP laptop, follow the instructions below:

1. Download the executable file and run it - this will extract the driver setup files to the specified location on your computer.

2. Go to Start -> Control Panel and select "Printers and Faxes." Click on "Add a New Printer" on the left hand side of the screen.

3. The Add Printer Wizard will start - click "Next." Select "Local printer attached to this computer" and hit "Next."

4. Select "Create a new port" and chose "Standard TCP/IP Port" from the drop down menu to the right. Click "Next."

5. This will start the Add New TCP/IP Printer Port wizard - hit "Next." For printer name or IP Address type "libprint3" (not libprint and without quotes) and for Port Name type "reference_color" (again, without quotes.) Click "Next."

6. At the Additional Port Information screen, select "Custom" (at the bottom, where it says Device Type.) Then click on "Settings."

7. Make your settings match the graphic below (libprint3 not libprint), and select "Ok." BYTE COUNTING MUST BE ENABLED!

8. Back at the previous screen, click "Next." and at the next screen "Finish."

9. At the Install Printer Software screen select "Have Disk..." and find the files you extracted in step 1. Select the .inf file and press "Open."

10. Press "OK." and at the next screen select "HP LaserJet 4200 PCL 6" and hit "Next."

11. Name the printer and choose whether you wish it to be your default or not. Select "Do not share" and print a test page - Science Library staff can tell you whether or not your test page made it to the queue successfully. Click "Next" and "Finish" to complete the process.


By default the printer's duplexer is not installed - this means you cannot use double sided printing until you complete the following steps: 12. Return to the "Printers and Faxes" control panel. Right click on the printer you just added and select "Properties."

13. Click on the tab labeled "Device Settings" and scroll down to "Installable Options." (You may need to expand the button by clicking on the plus icon.)

14. Click on "Not Installed" to the right of the text "Duplex Unit (for 2-sided printing)" and click "Installed". 15. Press "Apply" and then "OK."
