Abstract

The collection consists of three photograph albums containing 82 images, primarily cartes de visite dating from the 1880s. The collection provides excellent exemplars of the carte de visite format and of portraiture styles for men, women and children from 1859-1900. It is noted for several portraits of author and traveler Isabella Bird.

Scope & content

The collection consists of three photograph albums containing 82 images, primarily cartes de visite. The images have been removed from the albums to make inscriptions and photographer\'s imprints accessible, but retain the original order. Several of the images are duplicates. Provenance is undocumented; attribution is assigned based on the identity of the people pictured.

The collection provides excellent exemplars of the carte de visite format and of portraiture styles for men, women and children from 1859-1900, primarily dating from the 1880s. It is noted for several portraits of author and traveler Isabella Bird.

Isabella Bird (1831-1904) was the daughter of a clergyman who practiced in Sheffield. The family moved to Edinburgh after his death. Isabella was a noted traveler and writer, visiting the United States, Australia, Hawaii, the Far East, India, Turkey, Persia, Kurdistan, Tibet and Morocco. She was a noted chronicler of her travels; A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains (1879) was among her best known works. In 1881 she married Dr. John Bishop (d. 1886), an Edinburgh physician and student of Lister. In 1892, she became the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society.

The Tingle and Bishop families lived in Sheffield, and manufactured tableware. The relationship between the families is not clear. In the 1871 census, Alfred Tingle headed a household that includes his son, John Bishop Tingle, and a visiting widow, Elizabeth Bishop.
