JUSTIN CHENOWETH Papers
Introduction
Justin Chenoweth was born in Clark County, Illinois, in 1825 and came to California via Panama in 1849. He left California after a very short time, and came to Oregon, arriving with the U.S. Mounted Rifles later in 1849. Chenoweth was a surveyor, and settled on a claim west of The Dalles.
The collection includes: 6 letters from Martin Chenoweth, student at Indiana College, Bloomington, Indiana, to Jacob Harlan, Darwin, Illinois, 1832-1833; 36 letters from Justin Chenoweth to his father, daughter, and son, 1846-1896, written from Alexandria, Louisiana, and various places in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia; and 12 letters of Justin Chenoweth, Jr. from Neah Bay and various points in Alaska, where he was engaged in sealing, 1889-1894. Also included are files on Chenoweth family history and genealogy, and an unpublished manuscript, Justin Chenoweth, Oregon Pioneer of 1849.
