James C. Baker was pastor of Trinity Church (Methodist Episcopal) in Urbana, Illinois. John A. Patten was a manufacturer of Wine of Cardui, a nostrum composed of specifics diluted in a liquid that was alleged to be 29 percent alcohol. Patten was also very influential in the councils of the church.
The collection consists of letters, to and from Baker, which represent an attempt to oust Patten from his position of influence and stop the sale of his medicine. Also included are newspaper clippings re Patten and his medicine.
