Training & Consulting

SCIS provides free training, consulting and support to any UO instructor interested in exploring innovative ways of integrating effective technology into teaching and scholarly publishing. SCIS training and consulting services are available in a number of ways:

• drop-in to Knight Room 19 during our regular hours (19 Knight Library - ground floor)
  
• schedule an appointment (346-1942 or scis@uoregon.edu)
  
• arrange for an in-office visit (call SCIS Consulting to arrange visit)
  
• request a training workshop
  
• attend one of our intensive summer courses

SCIS also serves as an important referral service for faculty who may need more advanced technical help or instructional design assistance.

Drop-In and By Appointment

Consultants are available to provide one-on-one training and support any time during our hours. However, during those hours you might want to call in advance (346-1942) to reserve a workstation or specific hardware (e.g., digital still camera or digital video camera). Workstations that are not reserved in advance are available on a first come, first served basis. Calling in advance also allows us to make sure that the staff member on duty will be prepared to help you with your particular questions.

When not in use to provide training, our extensive collection of software and hardware is also available to faculty and GTF patrons for independent projects.

In-Office Visits

We can also provide free in-office visits to faculty and GTFs who would like assistance using several specific instructional technologies in the courses you are teaching or developing. At your request, we will send a SCIS staff member or student employee to help you. For instance, perhaps you would like help using Blackboard; we can help you get acclimated with creating and maintaining your course web site and using Blackboard to interact with your students. Most visits will take less than two hours. We will try to schedule your office visit for within two weeks of your request.

Workshops on Demand

Workshops on Demand offer customized workshops for the University of Oregon community to meet technology training needs of its students, faculty, and staff, with a focus on academic and curricular topics. These workshops replace the open enrollment workshops previously offered by the IT Curriculum. Workshop topics range from Blackboard, to PowerPoint, EndNote, Dreamweaver and Excel to name a few.

Intensive Summer Courses

SCIS works closely with Academic Affairs to plan and implement the provost's "Instructional Technology Initiatives for Faculty". Each summer we provide support for several week-long workshops.
