Using Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves)

The Electronic Reserves collection provides online access to selected documents on reserve for specific UO courses. These documents are on the World Wide Web and are available for viewing and printing 24 hours a day. Electronic reserves may include journal articles, book chapters, class notes, past exams, and homework solutions. Access to these materials is limited to UO students, staff, and faculty. Materials placed on E-Reserve must meet the University Libraries' Copyright Guidelines.

You can also see materials on reserve for your course by following a link in your Blackboard coursesite. The library's Blackboard course management system is used by most courses on campus for announcements, handouts, readings, assignments, and grades. For more information see Blackboard.

Steps to using E-Reserves

  1. Most files require a PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Be sure your computer has this software.
  2. Retrieve course by instructor name or course number: Select the Course Reserves tab at the top of any library web page and enter the instructor or course number.
  3. Follow link to "Click here for reading" (Listed next to the entry for "E-Reserve Index for [instructor name, etc.]). This is the index which has links to all the course readings on E-Reserve.
  4. Key user name and password
  5. Follow links to individual course readings

System Requirements

Adobe Acrobat Reader: to view materials on electronic reserve you will need a PDF viewer. If using Adobe Acrobat Reader, versions higher than 6.0 are recommended. You can download the software for free from Adobe's Web site. Before installing the new software you will need to uninstall any older versions of the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Click here to download Acrobat Reader and read instructions for installation.

System requirements for each version of the Acrobat Reader software will vary. Please see "Adobe Acrobat Reader - System Requirements" for current information.

Web browser: Some web browsers may not integrate easily with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If Electronic Reserve files do not open automatically when following the online links, you may need to save the files to disk before opening them. Web browsers available on the Duckware CD are recommended.

NOTE: The quality and legibility of a scanned image will vary when displayed as a PDF file on your computer screen, based on a variety of factors. These include: the quality of the original document, the settings used when the document was scanned, and the resolution of your monitor. If you are attempting to read a PDF document on your screen, familiarize yourself with the various "View" options of the Acrobat Reader, especially those which permit magnification.

Username and Password Information

To limit access to students enrolled in the class, electronic reserves require a username and password. (These limitations are in accordance with Fair Use guidelines for electronic reserves.)

Instructors are given the username and password and will share these with you. Students may also obtain them by contacting staff at the Knight Library Reserves and Video Desk (541.346-3067).

Some individual articles may require off-campus users to enter their name and University ID number for access. More information about the library account is available online or from any checkout desk.
