Submitting Documents for Electronic Reserves

The paper documents you provide for electronic reserves must fall within the specifications below. Papers that do not meet these specifications will not be scanned, but the hardcopy will be made available for checkout to your students.

Specifications:

  • Provide documents without staples, staple holes, or tattered or folded edges which may jam the scanner.
  • Documents must be single-sided copy only.
  • Use 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper, with a 1/2 inch margin on all sides.

Tips to facilitate high-quality documents:

  • Consistent page orientation: submit each item entirely in either portrait or landscape format. Documents with combined orientations will be scanned as submitted and your students will have to rotate the pages when they view the document.
  • Use sharp, clean copies: second-generation copies, or those which are faded or printed with colored ink do not scan well.
  • Handwritten notes or answer keys should be legible and be written in dark ink.
  • Avoid black edges around the perimeter of the copy.
  • Minimize shadow in gutters (hint: eliminate by turning book so that copier light runs down spine, rather than across spine)
  • Do not print pages from the web. Instead, submit the web address to Reserve staff for direct linking from your course index.
