System resources during database merger
====================================================================
The Orbis and Cascade databases will be
merged in the summer of 2003. From
mid-June through August, records will
be loading from Cascade into Orbis.
Data from all Cascades local systems
will be loading simultaneously, over
multiple links. Central catalog system resources will be
strained.
INN-Reach software works continuously in
the background, copying
transactions at the local site to the
union catalog. Orbis member library
transactions will still be processed
while the Cascade records are being
loaded. To minimize loading delays and
potential problems, transactions
need to be limited to
"regular" daily library activities, such as local
circulation, cataloging new materials,
and updating individual records.
--- NO MAJOR PROJECTS should be
scheduled during this period. --- We hope
that this notice provides you with
ample time to plan work so that it can
be completed before this period, or
postponed until the load is completed.
** No local database projects June 15 -
Sept. 1 **
We'll certainly let you know of any
schedule changes that will allow more
leeway in scheduling your local
projects.
Examples of projects to avoid: batch or global updating to correct large
groups of records, and batch purges to
delete item, order and
bibliographic records. For libraries that contract with vendors for
authority work: receiving a file of updated
headings can impact thousands
of records in the local system, which
are all re-sent to the central
database; these projects ned to be
avoided as well.
