INN-Reach WebOPAC holdings display enhancement, Rel. 2002 Phase 2: Examples

Holdings are sorted by the Library. Then the rows for each library are sorted by the following order (if corresponding holdings data are present): institutional URL, then checkins, then items, then orders.

The table heading labels and positions don’t change, they remain the s ame for one giant table. You can however choose whatever labels you want and have as many columns as you want (except first column is always the institution). However many columns you set up, they will all appear, all the time, even when empty. Data that doesn’t come over to central in the institutional records cannot be displayed.

The table below is based on LINK+. Call number and summary hol dings data have been combined into one column. For checkin records, both call number and summary holdings will display, and for items, just the call number will display. (2 items shown below.)

Here is another possibility. The call number data and the summary holdings data are in 2 separate columns now, and a new column has been added for public notes. The labels have also been changed, and the column widths have been changed. (2 checkins shown.)

You can change the cells underneath the headings somewhat, by having them merge over empty cells. For instance, you can tell the URL row to put data in the Electronic Link column, then merge the empty cells to the right with it. The idea is to gain more real estate for that column when you know the cells to the right will be empty for that kind of a row. (If those cells should have any data for that kind of row, I think it would not display.) (Shown below are an institutional URL, 2 items, then an order.)

You will get word wrap in cells. Here is what it looks like if you choose not to merge cells. Not clear what it would do with a long, bare URL with no spaces in it (for example, http://www.referencebooks.com/encyc/list.asp?dfjk=titleZ....) (An in stitutional URL, then 2 items, then 1 order, then another institutional URL are shown below.)

If there are no URLs, the Electronic Link column remai ns, but with all blank cells in this setup. You can only merge to the right, and only with cells that should be empty for that record type. (Shown below are 2 items.)

ORCA needs to decide: how many columns, which data do we want, what can be reasonably combined, what to label the columns? Do we want to merge cells to provide more space to display elements such as URLs?
