GUIDE TO USING THE PAPER VERSION OF THE MUSIC INDEX

Search the Music Index under subject for your topic.

Copy down the following information:

    a. Article title.
    b. Author of article.
    c. Periodical title (abbreviated)
    d. Volume Number
    e. Page Numbers
    f. Date of article (important!)

Look up the Periodical abbreviation in the front of the Music Index, in the section entitled: Periodicals Indexed.

    DOWN BT Down Beat; Jazz, Blues & Beyond. John Ephland, managing ed. Maher Publications, 180 W. Park Ave, Elmhurst, Ill. 60126 Monthly $26.00

Look up the full periodical title in the UO Library's catalog:

    a. Choose the Advanced Catalog Search from the main web catalog menu.
    b. Click on the Journal Title button, and type the name of the magazine into the search space provided.
    c. If you get more than one title, pick the first title that seems to have the complete title by typing the number to the left of the title.
    d. Your display should look like this:

    Title Down beat
    Publisher [Chicago, Maher Publications]
    Location MUSIC ML 1.D6
    LIB. HAS 21(1954)-70(2003)
    Latest Received: November 2003 70:11

    Bound periodicals (usually older than the current year) are listed in the line, LIB HAS. These are shelved on our regular music shelves (if the location says MUSIC) like a book. If they are located in Knight, then they are shelved like a book on the appropriate floor.

    If you click on the Latest Received line, the catalog will tell you what editions we have sitting on the current periodical shelves.

    Unbound periodicals with the MUSIC location are on the Music Periodicals shelves next to the Music Reference Desk. All others are on the second floor in Current Periodicals.

    Also note if the Library's entry has a Find Text button. If it does, click on it, and all the editions we own of this journal, including any full-text online versions, will be noted, along with an interlibrary loan form (if we don't own the year you need), and other helpful connections.
