Searching for Compact Discs in the UO Library's On-line Catalog:

    [Note: There is no direct way to limit your searches by author or title with "compact discs." However, these can be recognized by their call number (Compact Disc) and their location (Douglass or Doug. Circ) under author and title entries, when you are searching recordings.]

    [Also Note: We have a Circulating Compact Disc Collection whose cases you can browse in the Douglass Listening Room. While these aren't all the recordings we own, you may find that there are some of interest to you! They are also listed in the Library's catalog as Location = Doug. Circ.]

Searching for Compact Discs in the Text (Non-Web) Version of the UO Catalog:

    [Note: The version of the UO Library Catalog for text-only (which is the most efficient way to search for compact discs) is available from the Advanced Catalog Search on the web version. Under Catalog Services (up on the right hand side of the page), click on the Non-Web Version of Catalog.

    Option I: (If you know the composer and/or title of the piece you want)

      Once you've connected from the web version to the text version:

    • Type W (for search by keyWords)
    • Type in your composer's last name and "compact disc*" and hit Return (or Enter).
    • You may then choose to limit your search (using L for Limit) to a particular piece by the composer or by a performer (using the Author limitation (for Performer), the Title limitation (for title)- or just browse through the entries on the screen.

    Option II: (If you just want to see every compact disc the UO Library owns)

    • From the text version screen, type C (for search by Call Number)
    • Type D (for Other Non-LC Call Numbers)
    • Type: Compact Disc CX
      [You will need to hit the Continue button at least twice, as the catalog only displays 5,000 entries at a time.]
      You will receive a list of the 15,000+ compact discs we own.

      If you want to browse from the end of the numerical list, note the total number of entries in the top bar of the screen.

    • Choose A (Another Search by Non-LC Call No )
    • Type the call number of the largest number after the words Compact Disc CX. This will get you to near the end of the list.
    • To work your way back in the previous numbers, choose R from the menu.
    • To view the titles of the list without pulling each one up, type D; to see both authors and titles, type T.
      You can then search the list by browsing with the forward command (F) or the back command (B.)

    Option III: (Again, if you want a list of all our compact discs)

    • Use the Scoping mechanism (Y) to begin your search for Audio Recordings.
    • Then do a Keyword search with the words, compact disc*.
    • Limit (L) the search to your composer (by Author) and Title.
      You should receive most of the compact disc recordings of this piece.

To Search for Compact Discs in the Web Version of the Catalog:

    Option I: (If you want a particular composer's compact disc recordings.)

    • Bring up the UO Library Catalog;
    • Using the pull down menu, search the Catalog by Keyword;
    • In the search bar provided, type in "compact disc*" (including the quotes) and the composer's last name.
      You should receive most of the composer's compact disc recordings.

    Option II:
    (If you want a list of all our compact discs)

    • Bring up the UO Library Catalog ;
    • Click on Advanced catalog search;
    • Choose the Call # tab, then search the middle Non-LC Call # bar;
    • Click on the search box, and type in Compact Disc CX

      You will get a page that begins the list, with call number and title information.
      To view the most recent compact discs, note the highest number of the compact discs listed, then:

      • Click on the button above the list marked Start Over;
      • Repeat the steps above until you get to the Non-LC Call# box;
      • Type in the box Compact Disc CX and that number.

      This will put you near the end of the list. You can then scroll backward or forward in the list by clicking on the call numbers displayed,
      or using the Prevous and Next arrows.

    Option III:
    (To search the latest acquisitions -Only available in the web version of the catalog)

    • From the UO Library Catalog web page, click on Advanced Catalog Search
    • Pull down the Catalog Services window
    • Choose New Acquisitions, then Music Services
      The first entries will be our recent compact discs, as the list is arranged by call number-and Compact Disc is the first entry!

Happy Hunting! If you have any problems with your search, or have suggestions for new purchases, please contact Leslie Bennett (the music librarian).
