About the UO Aerial Photography Service

Students, Faculty & Staff of the Oregon University System (OUS) who are doing academic research may request to view aerial photography on-site and free of charge. Aerial photography and map research is a fee-based service for the public.  This includes, but is not limited to individuals working for private, state, and federal organizations. Requests can be placed via e-mail or fax. Fees go toward recovering the cost of providing the service and the maintenance and development of the collection.

Making a Request

Request Forms

Requests are only received via email and fax. All photo requests must include a request form and a map. Research takes 3-4 business days. If you need help submitting a request, please stop by the Research Desk on the first floor of the Knight Library or email us at map@uoregon.edu.

Map Requirements

All photo requests must include a map. Acceptable maps should be appropriate scale to the size and dimension of the site and show enough context or information for us to identify the location. USGS 1:24000 topographic maps and internet based maps are highly recommended for smaller urban sites while 1:100,000 scale maps are appropriate for larger sites. Tax lot maps can be sent as supplements, but are not replacements for topographic or street maps. For e-mail requests, a map should be attached as a small file in .jpg format. Please take a look at our sample maps and a brief tutorial for making maps.

Aerial Service FAQ

Answers to questions patrons have about copyright, image usage rights and other information about our operations.

Circulation of Aerial Photography

Aerial photography does not circulate. Class sets of duplicate images have been created and circulate to faculty for in class instruction. Please contact the Aerial Photography Coordinator to learn more about class sets. Patrons are welcome to view photography in the library, and to bring in a reasonable amount of equipment for viewing and reproducing images (within fair use copyright law). See below for information about reproducing images.

Research Fees

Does not apply to OUS patrons

The research fee is $50.00 per hour for aerial requests made by Oregon residents and businesses and $60.00 for out of state patrons. Note that actual time spent processing and filling a request is billed. Prices provided here are estimates and may vary based on the location of your site, the accuracy of the information you provide, and the nature of your request. There is an additional fee for duplication services. See below for details.

Duplication of Aerial Photography

The Map and Aerial Photography Collection offers digital reproduction services. This service increases the viewing resolution and thus the quality of the duplicated images, allows for easy digital manipulation of images, use within a GIS, and saves time in shipping and duplication. UO patrons who are scanning photos are required to use the 11x17 flatbed scanner in the Document Center workstation area because standards bed sizes do not accommodate aerial photos. Public patrons can view photos onsite, photocopy them using other, or pay for digital reproduction.

Scanned images are available for maps and photos when allowed by copyright. Images are scanned at a standard resolution of 600dpi, in jpg format. Patrons may request a higher resolution or tif format as well. For optimal viewing we recommend that you download or save the files to portable media and review them in imaging software. We can also write to CD (please see "Delivery and Viewing In-house" below).

Scanning services are billed at $40 per hour. Typical scanning times are listed below. These times are based on the 600dpi standard resolution and may vary for maps, large format items, or higher resolution scans. A large site may require a larger portion or the whole of a 9x9 inch print be scanned. If a duplication request will result in large amounts of scanning or research time (more that three times the normal) the customer will be notified before work is started.

Delivery and Viewing In-house

We strive to have requests finished in 3-4 business days. Users requesting in-house viewing will be notified via email when the photos are ready.  When ordering duplication, photos are posted to our website. Each request is assigned a unique page on the library server. These pages will not be linked to any other pages, in order to maintain your confidentiality. Images will only be kept on the website for 1 week after scanning so it is critical that patrons save these files to their own computers. After 1 week, photos will be deleted, unless other arrangements are made. We can not be held responsible for files that are not retrieved in a timely fashion: requests for deleted photos will be billed as new requests.

We can also create CD-ROMs. There is a flat fee of $5 to write to CD-R's. Disks can be sent through the US Postal Service, or via Federal Express. Customers who wish to use FedEx must provide their account number on the research request form. The cost for shipping via USPS will be added to the research invoice. USPS shipping and handling costs are usually less than two dollars.

Billing

You will be billed by mail within two weeks of the completion of your request. Credit card payments (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted by phone once you have received your bill. Failure to make payment within 90 days of billing will result in the suspension of your account.  Further delinquency may prevent you from conducting any business with the State of Oregon.  We reserve the right to require pre-payment in cases of poor payment history.
