Map & Aerial Photography (MAP) Library

Circulation Policies and Procedures

The University of Oregon Map and Aerial Photography Collection is a part of the Knight Library's Document Center. While anyone may consult the MAP Collection and request assistance from staff, borrowers should be part of the Oregon University System (OUS) either as a student, staff or faculty member. Non-OUS affiliated persons can purchase a borrowers card from the Circulation Desk at the front of the Knight Library.

The MAP Collection has four material types, each with its own circulation policy and procedure:

Atlases and Reference Books

Atlases and reference books do not circulate except under special circumstances. They may be consulted in the MAP Collection only.

Maps

Most maps found in the public area of the MAP Collection manually circulate to UO or other OUS academic patrons for a one week period. Faculty may borrow maps for a two week period. Before the due date, borrowers can stop by in person or phone the Document Center circulation desk and ask that the borrowed maps be renewed for another week. Further renewals must be made with the maps in hand.

Historic maps, National Survey maps (other than the United States) and ODOT Transportation maps do not circulate.

Aerial Photography

Aerial Photographs do not circulate outside the Library. After requesting and receiving their photography, patrons may photocopy photos. Patrons are also welcome to bring a laptop computer and scanner to use while visiting. Students and faculty may also schedule time through the Documents Reference desk to use our GIS Lab facilities for scanning. Scanned aerial photos can be saved to a CD, zip disk, or transferred to other Oregon University System locations. Only faculty may check photography out of the library to be used for instructional purposes.

Given the immense size of the Aerial Photography collection, only trained MAP Collection staff can retrieve photography. Public browsing of photography is not permitted, however, photo mosaic indexes for some projects are available in the public areas. Please allow for a two day turnaround time when making a aerial photo request. For more information on our Aerial Photography collection and request procedures, please see our Aerial Photography Research Service.

Geospatial Data

Most geospatial data is currently being classified as reference material and does not circulate. Data held in the public-domain at the MAP Collection can be accessed by the Map Librarian or over the Internet. Data held in the Map Collection can be copied to a zip disk or CD by arrangement. Please bring such items with you to the Map Collection. We do not sell any type of diskettes.

Geospatial data that is held in the Map Collection but does not lie in the public domain will be made available only to faculty, students, or staff of the University of Oregon, as per our user agreements.
