Map and Aerial Photography (MAP) Library

Locating Library Materials: Maps, Aerial Photography, Atlases & Geospatial Data

The Map & Aerial Photography Collection (MAP), located on the first floor of the Knight Library in the Documents Center, supports research using a variety of geographic and cartographic materials and formats.

Note that only 15-20% of MAP materials are cataloged in the online catalog. The majority of map materials are classified by the LC (Library of Congress) system, using Schedule G. Geographic atlases are classed from G1000.3 to 3122, and maps are classed from G3190 to 9999. We have a world map of map call numbers. There are some un-classed materials that are filed according to geographic place. The collections contain materials in a variety of formats including paper, digital, and microform.

We are currently working on placing 'shelving indicators' into catalog records to aid in finding materials. These indicators include:

  • (Hist) and (Hist over)
Located in our secure storage area. Please ask staff for assistance in accessing these materials. Due to their fragile and rare nature, you may be asked to return when the MAP Librarian is available. For best results, make an appointment.
  • (vf)
Folded material located in filing cabinets.
  • (Sci VF)
Folded materials produced by the USGS located in filing cabinets.
  • (rolled)
Located on top of the cabinets closest to the Documents reference books. You'll see them.
  • (Science

For best results ask for assistance at the Document Center Desk. Many materials are housed in restricted areas that require staff retrieval.
