What is the University Library's mission?

The University of Oregon Library System supports the instructional and research programs of the University.

When is the Library open? What are the Library's hours?

The hours the Library is open vary based upon whether classes are in session or whether the university is on intersession. For information on the Library's hours and schedule, please phone 541/346-3054.

How do I make a suggestion about the Library's collections, facilities, or services?

Please submit a suggestion via the UO Library Catalog suggestion box.

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is a course management system that helps instructors provide web sites for their courses. All students enrolled in courses that use Blackboard are automatically given accounts on the system. You can get help using Blackboard by visiting the Knight and Science ITCs.

How can I find employment in the Library System?

Ask at the Library Personnel Office or phone the Office at 541-346-1893.

What reference services are available by phone, by FAX, or by E-mail?

Ask a Librarian offers several different methods to receive reference assistance.

How do I find class reading materials my professor said are in the Library or are on reserve in the Library?

Instructors may place either library materials or personal copies of materials on reserve -- available for limited check out. Materials may be identified either by instructor or by course number.

Do I need to consult the card catalog in doing research?

To locate many materials cataloged before 1975, you must use the card catalog located on the second floor of the Knight Library.

How long will it take to get a book or journal article through interlibrary loan?

The length of time varies depending on where we are able to obtain the requested item. If the item can be found in Oregon, you will usually get your item within a week. Otherwise, it may take ten days to two weeks.

I may need assistance using the Library because of a disability. What services are available or whom do I contact?

For information prior to coming to the Library, contact Andrew Bonamici at 541/346-2682, the Library's Liaison for Patrons with Disabilities. When you are in the Library, contact staff at any of the service desks.

Where can I find a computer to do word processing?

There are three locations within the Library System where you can do word processing. Try the the Instructional Technology Center (ITC) of the Knight Library. Use of ITC services and equipment is limited to UO students, faculty and staff.

What photocopying facilities are available? How much does copying cost? Can you make color copies? Can you copy maps?

Consult staff at service desks for details about copying facilities. (Public copiers in Knight are also shown on the floor maps.) Photocopies are $.08 (card) or $.10 (cash) per page. A color copier is available in the AAA Library. Color copies are $1.00 per page.

Will I be able to make copies of microfilm or microfiche?

Yes, the Library has machines which will make paper copies from microfilm and microfiche. No copies are available from microcard or microprint. Copies cost ten cents ($.10) per print. Since the reader/printers take only dimes or copy cards, please ask at the service desk for assistance in using these machines. There is a dollar bill change machine in the Microforms Department which returns dimes.

May I charge copying to a budget number? Can I obtain a copy card and what is the charge?

UO departments may purchase cards and establish Campus Cash accounts by Journal Voucher. Contact the UO Card Office at 6-3113.

Where can I get change?

If you want change for copiers in Knight Library, go to the Checkout/Information Desk. We're sorry, but we don't have change for parking meters or laundry, or other non-library purposes.

Where can I get a refund if the copy machine takes my change?

Go to the Checkout/Information Desk in Knight, or to the circulation desk in branch libraries.

Does the Library have or sell diskettes?

Yes, the Library sells IBM-preformatted computer diskettes at the Checkout/Information Desk for $1.00 each.

Does the Library have a FAX machine I can use?

There are no FAX machines available for public use in the Library. FAX services are available for a fee at the EMU Ticket Office--on the main floor of the EMU--or at the UO Bookstore.

How can I get an orientation to the Library and its facilities, collections, and services?

The Knight Library offers 45-minute orientation tours on Wednesday and Thursday during the first two weeks of each term. Tours begin at the reference desk on the first floor at 2:30 pm.

How can I arrange for a library instruction session or a tour?

For introductory tours or presentations, contact Colleen Bell, Library Instruction Coordinator. For an instructional session in a specific subject or for a class in an academic department, contact the the appropriate library subject specialist.

How can I find information about the Friends of the UO Library?

The Friends of the Library actively promote the welfare of the University Library through donations and volunteer activities.
