When is the Library open? What are the Library's hours?

The University Library's hours vary depending on whether classes are in session or whether the University is on intersession. A handout of hours is available at public services desks in all libraries. You may also phone 541/346-3054.

How many volumes or books are held in the University of Oregon Library System? How many journals or serials?

The UO Library is the largest library in the state of Oregon, with its collections totaling more than two million volumes and approximately 17,000 journals.

Will all the materials I identify be in one building?

No, you may need to use materials located in any one of the libraries in the University of Oregon Library System. Libraries in the Library System may be found in six different buildings on campus, though the Library also has numerous collections and departments within the central library building, the Knight Library. These seven library locations are the the Knight Library, Science Library, Architecture and Allied Arts Library, Portland Architecture Library, Mathematics Library, and the OIMB Library. The Law Library, housed at the UO Law School, is also part of the library system.

Where can I find a computer to do word processing?

Try the Instructional Technology Center (ITC) of the Knight Library. The computer workstations also offer access to the World Wide Web, e-mail, and other software programs.

I may need assistance using the Library because of a disability. What services or facilities are available or whom do I contact?

Assistance for patrons with disabilities may be requested at any service desk. Prior to coming to the library, you may contact Andrew Bonamici, Liaison for Patrons with Disabilities, at 541/346-2682.

How can I check out films or videos that the Library owns? Where are these housed? Is there equipment for viewing these resources?

Videos, dvds, and laser discs are housed in the Video Collection, in the northeast corner of the main floor of Knight Library. The Reserves and Video Room has viewing stations for these items. 16mm films are located in Media Services and can be viewed there.

Does the Library have lockers for public use?

No, the Library does not provide lockers. Please note that due to the large number of thefts, we recommend you do not leave your personal items or your checked out library books unattended.

How are the books in the Library arranged? What classification system does the Library use?

Most of the Library's materials are arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system [pdf]. Call numbers located on the spine of books begin with a letter or two.

Where is the card catalog?

The card catalog is located on the third floor mezzanine of the Knight Library. Please use the online UO Library Catalog for the most up to date information about the Library's holdings, since the card catalog has not been updated in approximately twenty years.

Where are the restrooms in Knight Library?

Restrooms are available on every floor of the Knight Library. Please ask for assistance or consult one of the library maps available at service desks or posted at various locations throughout the library.

Where is a FAX machine I can use?

There are no FAX machines available for public use in the Library. FAX services are available for a fee at the EMU Ticket Office-on the main floor of the EMU-or at the UO Bookstore.

Where can I find a typewriter to use?

The Information Technology Center (ITC) in the Knight Library has a typewriter. Use is limited to UO students, faculty and staff. Patrons wishing to use the typewriter must supply their own paper.

Does the Library have faculty study areas that a faculty member may reserve to use for an extended period of time? How does one reserve such a study in the Library?

Yes, faculty studies are available but must be reserved. Please inquire in the Librarian Administration Office, 115 Knight Library, or phone the Office at 541/346-3056 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Are group study rooms available in the Knight Library? Which rooms are available? Do I need to reserve them and how do I do this?

Yes, group study rooms are available. Although group studies are available on a first come, first serve basis, some may be reserved for short time periods. Please inquire at the Office of the Librarian, 115 Knight Library, or phone the Office at 541/346-3056 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

How can I reserve the Browsing Room , the room located directly across from the Circulation Desk on the first floor of Knight Library?

The Browsing Room may be reserved by both University and non-University groups for programs, workshops, etc. There is a fee for the use of this room. Please inquire at the Office of the Librarian, 115 Knight Library, or phone the Office at 541/346-3056 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Where are drinking fountains located?

Drinking fountains are located on every floor of the Knight Library. Please ask for assistance.

Can a faculty member reserve the Library's electronic classrooms? Whom should I contact?

The Library makes extensive use of its electronic classrooms because of our Workshops on Demand and other instruction. However, these rooms may be reserved in advance.

Where is the Lost and Found in the Library?

For lost and found items, please inquire at the Office of the Librarian, 115 Knight Library, or phone the Office at 541/346-3056 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. For lost and found items in other libraries on campus, inquire at the circulation desk of each library.

Where are the microforms located? Will I be able to make copies of microfilm or microfiche?

Most microform materials are located on the first floor of the Knight Library. The Microform Department does have machines which will make paper copies from microfilm or microfiche. No copiers are available for microcards or microprints. Copies cost ten cents per page. Since the reader-printers take dimes or copy cards only, please ask for assistance at the Microform service desk for assistance in using these machines. There is a dollar bill change machine in the department which returns dimes.

I need to use the phone. Where are public phones located?

In the Knight Library, pay phones are available on the first floor. When you enter through the west entrance near the Office of the Librarian on the first floor, they are just past the iron gates on the right. Please ask at the circulation desk if you have trouble locating them. Pay phones are not available in other libraries on campus.
