The UO Libraries offer support for instructors teaching credit courses
at the University of Oregon. Support comes in many forms, including:
- Classroom Instruction
- Library faculty are uniquely qualified to teach some concepts
common to a wide variety of disciplines, and are available to provide
course-related instruction on a number of topics. Instruction can be
offered as one or more class meetings, and the length of each class
may vary depending on the topics covered.
- Integrating Information Literacy
- Information literacy is defined in many ways and will be found under
many names, but at its most basic it is the process of teaching students
to think critically about the information environment, whether they are
engaged in finding, evaluating, using, or creating information.
Subject librarians can help
you identify course objectives that offer opportunities for developing
these critical skills, provide your students with
in-class instruction to help them develop
critical skills, work with you to develop
assignments that reinforce information literacy concepts.
- Research Assignment Calculator
- Create a personalized research and writing plan for each project,
with links to resources to help you through the process. Then sign
up for email reminders, to help you keep on track.
- Extending the Classroom
- The UO Libraries offer many ways to assist you in extending your
classroom beyond the regularly scheduled class times, whether it's to
fulfill 4th credit contact hour requirements, offer guided discussion
opportunities, or provide your students with the resources they need
to successfully complete your course. Examples include:
- Assigning small group or individual meetings with a
subject librarian
to discuss students' research needs.
- Using Blackboard
to provide students with an online classroom environment to
supplement in-class instruction. Talk to staff in the Center for Educational Technologies to discuss ways you can use Blackboard effectively and
creatively.
- Developing interactive multimedia components
for your Blackboard or other course web site; contact the
Interactive Media Group
to discuss your needs and/or ideas.
- Custom Research Guides
- The libraries' subject
specialists can work with you to develop a research guide
customized for the needs of your students.
Pre-Packaged Instructional Materials
- The libraries offer a number of pre-packaged instructional materials
that can easily be linked from your course web site or noted in your
course syllabus:
- Course Reserves
- Make syllabi, books, lecture notes, journal articles, class
assignments, sample tests, videos, audio cassettes, and other relevant
information to support classroom instruction available for short-term
loans or via the web.
-
Digital Images
- Digital image databases available for students and faculty.
