GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week on the Map Wed. & Thurs., Nov. 18-19

globesSet your GPS to map your route for a special expedition to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day and Geography Awareness Week at the UO. The focus this year is on the geography of Central Asia.

GIS Day takes place on the Wednesday of Geography Awareness Week, which was founded by National Geographic in 1987. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. More than 80 countries will participate in GIS Day this year by hosting a variety of events related to the mapping technology.

On Wednesday, November 18, Jim Meacham, of the UO InfoGraphics Lab in the Department of Geography, will kick off GIS Day with a talk entitled "Archaeology and Landscape in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia." The event in the Browsing Room of Knight Library will begin with refreshments at 3:30 P.M. followed by the presentation at 4:00 P.M.

The second event for Geography Awareness Week is a Tibetan Cultural Performance taking place at the EMU Ballroom on Thursday, November 19, at 11:30 A.M.

The UO Libraries, the Department of Geography, and the College of Arts and Sciences’ GIS Committee are sponsors of the GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week activities.

Support also comes from the UO chapter of the American Society for Photogrammetric & Remote Sensing; the College of Education; the Departments of Geological Sciences, Landscape Architecture, and PPPM; the School of Journalism and Communication; the Social Science Instruction Labs; and the National Geographic Society.
