UO WorldCat Expands Catalog Searches, Offers Improved Interface

Beginning Monday, August 17, library users can conduct a comprehensive catalog search of more than 90 million items held by libraries worldwide. The new system, called UO WorldCat, also offers a streamlined interface for search results that combine, into a single merged list, the collections of the UO Libraries, Summit libraries, and hundreds of other libraries worldwide.

A UO WorldCat search identifies all types of materials: books, journals, journal article citations, videos, DVDs, CDs, maps, and government documents.

When searching in UO WorldCat, entries for items owned by the UO Libraries appear at the top of the list and include information about location and availability. Links for electronic materials and FindText are included when appropriate.

Items held by Summit libraries display as a second tier and can easily be requested through UO WorldCat. (Summit libraries include a group of thirty-six college and university libraries in the Pacific Northwest). Items found that are not owned either by the UO Libraries or by a Summit library can be requested through an interlibrary loan link.

UO WorldCat searches also yield results from 60 million journal article citations from a variety of databases, including ArticleFirst, Medline, ERIC, British Library Serials, and more. Approximately 95,000 images from CAMIO—the Catalog of Art Museum Images Online—are also searchable and displayable through UO WorldCat.

UO WorldCat provides a number of other user-friendly features, including the following:

  • Shows how to cite an item in APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, and Turabian bibliographic style
  • Allows you to mark, save, and e-mail citations
  • Allows you to export citations to EndNote
  • Contains user-contributed reviews and ratings. You can also contribute reviews and ratings after logging into your account.
  • Provides images of book jackets and a link to Google Book previews
  • Allows you to choose the interface language: English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, or Chinese
