Researching the Great War

Online guides to library/research resources:

History Research Guide

Primary Sources Guide

Finding Articles:

America: History & Life – US & Canadian history

Historical Abstracts – the rest of the world

Remember that in these databases, you can limit your search by language (most will just want material in English) and by the time period covered in the article.

Finding Books:

The subject heading for World War I is "World War, 1914-1918"; you can also do a keyword search for "World War I" (use the quotes to search as a phrase). Be sure to use the advanced search option to get the best results.

Primary Sources:

We subscribe to the Historical New York Times, which provides full-text, fully-searchable access to the New York Times from 1851-2003.

Useful Indexes:

Index to the London Times (Ref AI 21 .T4...)

Index to the New York Times (Ref AI 21 .N44)

Readers' Guide Retrospective (index to popular magazines and some journals)

Browsing:

Main World War I section: D501-D651 (2nd floor)

Popular Magazines: AP2-AP4 (2nd floor)

Dewey World War I section: 940-940.93 (4th floor)

Searching the Catalog:

Use the advanced search option to limit your search by time period to find books published during the war on a variety of topics. Also useful is to do advanced searches with countries as authors. For example, doing an advanced search for author: great britain and subject: world war, 1914-1918 yields a number of primary sources including material published by the Imperial War Museum in London, British documents on the origins of the war, reports from the War Cabinet, and laws related to the war. Not all of the items that come up will be primary sources, so be sure to look at the results carefully.
