Searching CETEDOC Library of Christian Latin Texts

The following are search tips to help you navigate CETEDOC's search interface.

CETEDOC is available only from computers in the Knight Library. Please click exit when finished so that others may log on.

Searching/Inquisitio

Basic Searching.

Cetedoc is made up of two volumes. Both are searched by default.

  • Volume I: Patristic and Biblical texts
  • Volume II: Medieval Texts
  1. Fill in fields you want to search. Click button to left of field to browse index list and find Cetedoc's headings for Latin authors, titles, etc.
    • Auctor = List of authors, anonymous works are listed by genre
    • Titulus = List of titles, titles have been standardized for ease of use
    • Clavis = List of patristic works with chronological and bibliographic info
    • Aetas = List of time periods
    • Formae = Search by words or parts of words, spelling variants are preserved, thus search with u and i as used in Latin, not v and j. Formae index lists number of hits by:
      • P(atristic)
      • B(iblical)
      • M(iddle Ages)
  2. Hit Enter button to complete search.
Advanced Search Tips

The default search in Formae is phrase searching. The default search in Filter Fields is the AND boolean connector.

Boolean operator buttons to the right of search fields will connect fields in your search

  • = AND (the default setting)
  • , = OR
  • # = NOT

Wildcards & other limiters

  • ? = One unspecified character
  • * = Any number of unspecified characters
  • /n = Terms occuring within a maximum of n terms within a sentence in any order
  • %n = Terms occuring wihtin a maximum of n terms within a sentence in exact order

Results

Results are displayed under the tabs listed below. The number of results is displayed in the bottom right-hand corner of the Inquisitio screen.
  • Sententiae = Brief list of results, Volume I & II display separately, click tab in bottom left corner to view results from each volume.
  • Textus = Full text of results highlighted in Sententiae
  • Memento = Info on author, work, date, and any commentary added
Save to Disk or Print
