Starting Your Research

Business research topics are often very specific, and may require special techniques and resources. Please consult with the following guides for the most common types of research problems.

The following reference sources are bibliographic guides to business literature which provide comprehensive coverage of standard business reference sources of various formats. These guides provide an overview of the area being covered, annotate, and sometimes evaluate the business reference tools.

Finding Articles

Periodical Indexes: To look for articles in journals, magazines, or newspapers, you need to use the following periodical indexes which allow you to search by keywords, author, subject, or title.

  • Business Sources Premier
    Mostly full text. Covers business, management, economics, banking, finance, accounting and much more.
  • EconLit with Full Text
    Provides subject indexing and abstracts for the discipline of economics. Includes articles in over 620 journals, chapters in books, and dissertations.

Business Databases: To look for information on companies, business statistics, international markets use these databases which allow you to search by keywords, perform custom searches or browse by subject categories.

Company Information

  • Directory of Corporate Affiliations
    The Directory of Corporate Affiliations covers U.S. and non-U.S. public and private companies, their parents, affiliates, subsidiaries and divisions. Data includes leadership, financial and ownership information for each company.
  • Mergent Online
    Offers information on approximately 15,000 NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ companies. The service also provides data on 20,000 non-U.S. based corporations.
  • ReferenceUSA
    Contains directory data for over 12 million US firms and business establishments of all sizes.
  • Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage
    Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage brings together a dozen financial and investment publications that provide information for corporate research and for industry, competitive, and investment analysis. Among the publications included are such familiar titles as S&P's Corporation Records, Industry Surveys, Stock Reports, Stock Guide, Bond Guide, Dividend Record, Earnings Guide, Mutual Fund Reports, and the Outlook. Also included are S&P's Register of Corporations, Directors, and Executives and the Security Dealers Directory.

Business Statistics

  • Lexis-Nexis Statistical
    Indexes statistics in government publications, web resources, trade publications, international organization's reports
  • Sports Business Research Network
    Contains sport-specific news and market research on the Sporting Goods Industry. Data includes attendance statistics, sporting goods sales figures, and sport participation rates. There is also a full-text, searchable database of sixteen different sports business trade journals
  • TableBase
    Full text company, industry, product, and demographic tabular data from business and trade publications, statistics and reports.

International Markets

  • Global Insight Advanced Country Analysis and Forecast
    Provides economic, political and legal analysis for 203 countries, including comprehensive country reports, five-year forecasts, risk ratings and same-day analysis of events and trends.

Finding Books

  • UO Library Catalog
    Identify books by topic, title or author; identify journals and magazines owned by the UO Library. To find journal articles on your topic, use the databases listed in the section above. Once you have a citation, you can check the library catalog by doing a title search on the name of the journal to see if we have it here.
  • Summit, The Orbis Cascade Alliance Union Catalog
    Orbis is a consortium of libraries that doubles our collection. You can borrow books not owned by the UO Library by selecting the Request Item option. Orbis works only for books. If you want to request a journal article, you'll need to fill out an interlibrary loan form.
  • WorldCat
    Worldcat provides access to library catalogs from around the world. The database contains bibliographic records describing books, journals, maps, musical scores, manuscripts, etc.
