THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON

Pioneer Cemetery

The Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1873 by the local lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for use as a fraternal cemetery.Pioneer Cemetery. For many years the cemetery was considered as a viable space for future university growth. A 1963 plan (Lutes and Amundson) envisioned placing buildings over the graves by means of stilts and enabling navigation through raised walkways and bridges.
