This is an alphabetical list of commonly used government reference works that are now available on the Internet.

    Provides information about U.S. agriculture and describes all USDA programs. It also provides useful information about food safety, nutrition, rural issues, research, education, and natural resources.
  • Annual Energy Review. Energy Information Administration.
    Provides a wealth of data on energy production and consumption in the United States.
  • Background Notes. United States. Dept. of State.
    Brief (3-4 page) profiles of the people, history, government and economy of the countries of the world. Includes information on current conditions and foreign relations.
  • Career Guide to Industries. United States. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    Provides analysis of industry groups in terms of the career opportunities they offer.
  • The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. United States. General Services Administration.
    A database of federal grants and programs available to State and local governments, corporate entities, groups, and individuals.
  • Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments. United States. Central Intelligence Agency.
    Directory listing of current officials of foreign governments, including ambassadors to the United States and the United Nations, heads of central banks, as well as cabinet members.
  • CIA World Factbook. United States. Central Intelligence Agency.
    Provides basic facts, statistics, and maps of the countries of the world.
  • The Condition of Education. United States. Dept. of Education.
    Summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data.
  • County and City Data Book. United States. Bureau of the Census.
  • Digest of Education Statistics. United States. Dept. of Education.
    Provides statistics relating to education in the United States.
  • Economic Report of the President. Council of Economic Advisors.
    Includes an analysis of the current state of the U.S. economy, as well as a broad collection of economic statistics.
  • Health, United States. National Center for Health Statistics.
    Data indicating health trends in the United States.
  • The National Atlas of the United States. United States Geological Survey.
    Provides a comprehensive map-like view into the physical, social and cultural landscape of the United States, using data collected by the Federal government.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook. United States. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    A nationally recognized source of career information.
  • Presidential Visits Abroad. United States. Dept. of State.
    Prepared by the Office of the Historian, bureau of Public Affairs. Presents basic information concerning trips taken outside the United States by the President. It includes the first visit abroad, made by President Theodore Roosevelt, and contains coverage through the current president.
  • Public Land Statistics. Bureau of Land Management.
    Annual publication giving data on publicly owned lands in the united States.
  • Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics. United States. Bureau of Justice Statistics.
    Brings together data from more than 100 sources about all aspects of criminal justice in the United States.
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States. United States. Bureau of the Census.
    The national statistical yearbook containing information on a variety of subjects from numerous sources. Editions from 1995 to present are available online.
  • Survey of Current Business. United States. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
    Monthly publication showing current statistics for the U.S. economy.
  • Uniform Crime Reports. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
    Includes Crime in the United States and Hate Crime Statistics. Data is collected from local law enforcement agencies throughout the country.
  • United States Government Manual.
    Provides comprehensive information on the agencies of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches. It also includes information on quasi-official agencies, international organizations in which the United States participates, and boards, commissions, and committees.
  • World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers. United States. Dept. of State.
    A report containing annual military expenditures, arms transfers, armed forces, and related economic data.
