Demographics and Business Geography


  • Altavision Geographics (http://www.altageo.net/atlas.html) (Online Bay Area Atlas)

    Interesting site advertising their Business Geographic services. Nice examples of the power of business geographics with Online Atlas of San Francsco-Bay Area.

  • American Factfinder (http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsServlet)

    Maintained by the U.S. Census Bureau. Factfinder is the online portal for 1990 and 2000 census data. Users can query and map large amounts of census data at every level of geography. Data can also be downlpaded in a spreadsheet format and transposed for use in a GIS application. Maps may also be downloaded.

  • Economic and Business Geography Resources (http://faculty.washington.edu/krumme/resources/resources.html)

    Comprehensive website produced by the University of Washington. Lots of links and information on economic and business geography. Defines the area and offers suggestions for further research. Recommended for a newcomer interested in learning more.

  • Geography Network (http://www.geographynetwork.com/)

    An ever growing site maintained by ESRI. Provides access to large quanties of demographic and other data which can be mapped either online or downloaded. Great introduction to the power of GIS.

  • Site Selection (http://www.siteselection.com/)

    Valuable tool for finding the perfect site for your business. Although no mapping tools are available, Site Selection offers querying tools and provides a host of demographic and economic data of U.S. counties and cititeis to help the businessperson make the right choice.

  • Tiger Map Server (http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl)

    Also maintained by the U.Census Bureau. Tiger provides some addional map functions, including different projections and layers, but not all of the census data is available. Currently, only 1990 data is listed.
