GEOG 143 - Global Environmental Change


Finding Books

To find books, search the library's online catalog. The best way to find books on your topics is to search by keywords.

    1. Type in two or three words that describe your topic in the search box and then click the Search button.
    2. Browse the list of titles you retrieve. Click on a title that looks relevant.
    3. Note the location, call number and status of the book. This will help you to find the book on the shelf.
    4. Look at the subject heading for each title. Click on the a subject heading to find more titles on that subject.

Finding Journal, Magazine, or Newspaper Articles

I. Search GeoBase to find journal, or magazine articles.

II. Other Databases:

  • Academic Search Premier
    Covers current news, business and company information, government and legal information.
  • ArticleFirst
    Includes article citations from over 13,000 journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  • JSTOR: Electronic Journal Archives
    A fully searchable electronic database that contains the scanned images of over 100 major research journals in a variety of academic disciplines including business and economics, some of which began publication as early as the 1870s.

Once you find the citations of articles, you need to search the library's online catelog to find the call numbers of the periodicals.

  1. Select Journals & Serials search in the catalog
  2. Type in the title of journal or magazine. DO NOT type the title of the article.
  3. Click on the Search Button.

Current periodical are housed in the Current Periodical Room on the second floor. Older bound volumes are shelved by call numbers with other books in the Knight Library. If the journals or magazines are on microfilm or microfiche, they are located in the Microform Collection on the first floor. In the Science Library, periodicals are shelved alphabetically by titles.
