Science Data Services

  Intro | Data Assessment | Background | News/RSS

Research in many disciplines, at all institutions, is becoming increasingly data intensive. To support these newer research efforts, universities are investing more in information infrastructure to support researchers. That infrastructure can include data storage, high-performance computing, network services, curation, metadata and description, retrieval and analysis, visualization and modeling.

The Association of Research Libraries (the University of Oregon is a member) has been focused on these infrastructure issues since the NSF issued its seminal report a few years ago: NSF's Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21sth Century Discovery (see background for links). The research library community is most interested in those aspects of e-research that intersect with the services commonly offered by campus libraries, e.g., metadata tagging, preservation, access management.

To that end, the University of Oregon Libraries, with the generous support of Lorry I. Lokey, is learning more about the service needs and interests of our researchers. Our goal is to offer the necessary infrastructure, in collaboration with campus entities, that will position the University of Oregon to continue its extraordinary success as an AAU institution.

Some examples of research data:

  • mathematical models or computer code to simulate processes
  • sensor array data
  • spectra
  • video/audio files
  • image files
  • text
  • protein or genetic sequences
  • natural history collection databases
  • GIS (geographic information systems) data

Stakeholders

There are a number of stakeholders who can work together to support data services at the University:
  • UO Libraries; particularly Science Library; Archives; and Metadata Services and Digital Projects
  • Individual science departments and faculties – producers and users of data, and grantees; computing support
  • VP for Research and Graduate Studies – scientific research and funding
  • ORSA – data sharing policies of funding agencies
  • UO Information Services – infrastructure and computing support

How you can participate

If you are a researcher at the UO, you can describe data assets that are created/compiled through your research using the data inventory form, or contact Brian Westra to talk about your science data.
