The exhibits program of the University of Oregon Libraries is a valuable means of promoting the educational mission of the libraries and its relationship with the academic community.
The goals of the exhibit program are
In honor of the centennial of the founding of the Oregon Marching
Band, a comprehensive exhibit of the band and its precursors is on
display in Knight Library at the University of Oregon. Entitled "Sing
the Story Oregon: A Century of the Oregon Marching Band," the
student-produced exhibit details the band's history, including
uniforms, images, sheet music, biographies, and a timeline that
summarizes the major events in the life of the largest student-run
organization on the University of Oregon campus.
Some items of interest in the exhibit include the story behind Albert
Perfect and the "Mighty Oregon" fight song, information on long-time
band director John Stehn, four different uniforms from the band's
history, images of the band from its inception to the present, and
plasma screens displaying film clips from OMB pregame and halftime
performances from 2004 and 2008. It includes a brief overview of the
Oregon colony of Kappa Kappa Psi (a national honorary band society) as
well as information about some of the traditions of the band,
including the Oregon Marching Band Council and the Festival of the Bands.
The exhibit will run through September, 2009, in the exhibit cases on
the main floor of Knight Library. The display was arranged by Cristian Boboia and curated by Leslie Bennett.

Images inspire and engage us. They tell stories, provoke questions, and help
us to understand our place in the order of things. A picture can help
recreate a lost world, or show us a universe that only exists in the mind of
an artist. Like books, images are sources of both factual information and
springboards for our imagination.
The University of Oregon Libraries collects, curates, and maintains rich
collections of digital images. Dip into our website and find a vintage
photograph of the Skidmore Building, a Japanese ritual Boddhisattva mask, a
Toulouse-Lautrec poster advertising bicycle chains, or one of Eadweard
Muybridge¹s iconic photographs showing a horse at full gallop.
The camera lucida is a tool that refracts the light reflected by an object
onto a sheet of paper, upon which an artist can draw. The artist can
simultaneously see both the actual object and the object¹s refraction on the
paper, and can even trace the outline on paper. Similarly, these
collections of digital images serve to inspire artistic and scholarly work
at the University of Oregon. We invite you to make the UO Libraries Digital
Collections your tools for research, study, and creative projects.
