Spring 2005 Meeting Minutes

DIGOR Spring Meeting

Thursday April 7, 2005

OLA Annual Conference, Cascade Room, Holiday Inn Airport, Portland

Present: Valery King (chair); Laura Ayling (chair-elect); Susan Westin; Kelly Peterson

Reports

  • Treasury: as of 2/28/05, balance is $820.76.
  • Membership: The 4/1/05 report shows 22 members, six members fewer than the 28 we had this past Fall.
  • State Library (Susan Westin): Susan had several items to report.
    • A new Program Manager for Electronic Services has been hired. An announcement will appear shortly on the DIGOR list.
    • HB2118 concerning the state documents has passed the House and been referred to the Senate. No hearings have yet been held. If this passes as expected, the Administrative Rules hearings will occur this fall.
    • The Library has weeded 3rd copies of higher education publications, which will be offered to Oregon libraries on the DIGOR list.
  • Regional Library: no report as regional librarian Judy Andrews was unable to attend. However, Judy has scheduled a brown bag luncheon to review the current state of the GPO (Government Printing Office) including current initiatives, projects as well as the future of GPO. This will be on Wednesday, April 27, from 11:30-1:00 at Portland State University Library.
  • OLA Programs: Thursday’s program co-sponsored with the Intellectual Freedom Committee, The Umbrella of Secrecy: When the USA Patriot Act and FOIA Collide with Mary Ann Hyatt from the University of Oregon Law Library went very well. There were approximately 60 attendees and the feedback was enthusiastic and very positive. Our second sponsored program will be Friday at 3:15, when Marita Kunkel and Kelly Peterson from OIT will present Navigating the Waters of Collaboration for A Digital Library Project

Election of Officers

Kelly Peterson was elected Vice Chair/Chair-elect for 2005-2006.
Valery King will assume the duties of Secretary.
Laura Ayling will take over as the Chair.
Terms of office start officially on September 1.

Old Business

The transformation of the DIGOR website into a resource for government documents information and education for Oregon librarians has been going slowly, but we are still interested in working toward this goal. Valery will contact members who previously indicated that they may be willing to contribute useful pages or information; Kelly indicated she may also have some information that would be useful to have on the website.

New Business

With the treasury at a healthy level, the possibility of sponsoring a pre-conference for next year’s OLA was briefly discussed. This might perhaps revolve around the changes in the state and federal depository programs. Further thought is needed and discussions will occur at the Fall meeting in September.

Announcements

  • Valery will be attending the Spring Depository Conference in Albuquerque April 17-19 and will make a report to DIGOR.
  • Deb Hollens sends word of the Grand Opening of the new Southern Oregon University Library on May 19th. Several special guests will be speaking: on May 18th, ALA President Michael Gorman is scheduled to speak about the Future of Academic Libraries. Then on May 19th Bruce James, the Public Printer, will talk about the future of government information. An official announcement will appear shortly on the Libs-OR and DIGOR lists.

Fall Meeting

Deb Hollens has invited DIGOR to hold our Fall meeting in September at the new SOU Library in Ashland. One programming suggestion for this was sharing the skills and duties of documents librarians. Several of the most experienced documents people in Oregon are nearing retirement age; it would be a great service to provide a way to pass some of their expertise along.

Meeting adjourned at 6:05 pm.
