Fall 2004 Meeting Minutes DIGOR Fall Meeting Friday, September 17, 2004 Oregon Institute of Technology , Klamath Falls The meeting was called to order at 10:13 a.m. by Chair Valery King. In attendance were Judy Andrews, Laura Ayling, Deniece Davis, Deb Hollens, Valery King, Kelly Peterson, Ted Smith, Alex Toth. Minutes of the Spring meeting were approved. Chair Valery King reported that we have $786.76 in our account. Our membership is 28, the same as last year. ReportsValery King announced that she attended the recent OLA retreat. The annual conference will be held April 6-8 at the Holiday Inn, Portland Airport. The conference theme for next year is Connect and Conquer: the Power in Collaboration. It was noted that this conflicts with the ACRL national conference. There was no one from the State Library in attendance, but Jey Wann submitted a report via email. She reported that the electronic archiving proposal has been draft into a bill, which will go to the legislature next year. Judy Andrews gave a report on the Federal Depository Library Program. There is a bill pending in Congress to exempt satellite imagery from FOIA, which has received some discussion on govdoc-l. The preparation for the upcoming FDLP conference is not going smoothly. Information on the hotel was just released, which is very late for those making plans to attend. Judy feels to Superintendent of Documents seems to be jumping from project to project, with no consistent focus. As examples she mentioned the ideas for hiring regional trainers and the concept of a "dark archive". Judy concluded by saying that Federal depository librarians need to become more political, get a champion (in Congress) who can support the program. Old Business OLA Program Web Site Revitalization
Ted mentioned that when we discontinued the Documentor newsletter, we envisioned the web site picking up the slack, so we really should try to emphasize it as an important service of the organization. He said that anyone who has content for the site can send it to him and he will get it posted. New BusinessValery suggested that we should establish a mentoring program for new librarians. It was suggested that we use the web site to facilitate this. Suggestions included:
OLA Program Proposals Valery opened discussion on DIGOR's program proposals for the upcoming OLA conference. The new deadline for proposals is October 1.
The group agreed that the Klamath Waters program and co-sponsoring the Hyatt program with the IFTF would be enough for this conference. The "dealing with the legislature" idea is a good one, though, and may be used at a future conference. The DIGOR business meeting at OLA will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2005 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. AnnouncementsOn Monday, November 1 there will be a Northwest Government Information Network (NGIN) meeting in at the University of Washington's Gallagher Law Library in Seattle. DIGOR has been invited to send someone. NGIN is interested in exploring the possibility of holding a joint NGIN/DIGOR meeting. Judy Andrews and Deb Hollens are both planning to attend the upcoming FDLP Conference in Washington. Deb Hollens announced that government documents at Southern Oregon University moved into its new space in May. Documents has a very good space in the new building, and Deb thanked those who provided input and advice on the move. The digitization project is continuing apace. Deniece Davis highlighted the collections of the Shaw Historical Library, where we were meeting. She mentioned that OIT is gearing up to implement the Marcive service for its new Federal documents. Alex Toth stated that Pacific University's new library is to be occupied in August 2005. They are currently preparing the collections to move. Laura Ayling reported that Lewis & Clark's documents collection is being heavily weeded to make room for new materials. The meeting was adjourned at 12:15 p.m. The afternoon program was a presentation on the Klamath Waters Digital Project by Kelly Peterson. Submitted by Ted Smith, DIGOR Secretary |
