Fall 2002 Meeting Minutes DIGOR Fall Meeting Friday, November 1, 2002 University of Oregon , Eugene PresentLaura Ayling (Lewis & Clark), Rita Eberle (COCC) , Deborah Hollens (SOU), Valery King (OSU), Ted Smith (UO), Tom Stave (UO), Alex Toth (Pacific), Jey Wann (State Library), Susan Westin (State Library) Greeting/IntroductionsThe meeting was called to order shortly after 10:30 a.m. by chair, Susan Westin. ReportsFederal:Depository Library Council ReportSusan reported on Depository Library. Discussion on how to support GPO, Federal government is working on continuation funds. Susan will write letter to Committee chair to express DIGOR’s opinion. There will be a spring 2003 Depository Council meeting in Reno, interest in attending but travel funding for attendees may be a problem. State:Update on Oregon DocumentsJey reported on ORDOCS. Doing a wonderful job under difficult circumstances, i.e., short-staffed, slowed down by retrospective conversion project, migrating to III. Discussion as to why the State Library is not a part of ORBIS. E-archiving projectDiscussion on adding ORDOCS that have gone to web only. State Library is thinking of archiving back issues of e-documents, but hiring freeze, budget, and economic situation have put the project on hold. Jey is looking for a “horror story” on a lost e-document to gain attention for the importance of this project. Projects:IMLS Digitalization ProjectDeb Hollens presented the Southern Oregon Digital Archives (SODA) digitization project: http://soda.sou.edu. They are digitizing Federal and State government documents on the Cascade-Siskiyou bioregion, and books, documents, and articles relating to the indigenous peoples of the bioregion, First Nations Tribal Collection (93 so far). Deb discussed the three types of searches that are available, Boolean, concept, and pattern searches. They should have about 700 documents when completed, but need another grant to digitize maps. Look for more of SODA at the OLA Conference. Government Information Sharing ProjectValery discussed that the “new” Information Sharing Project was a reworking of the old project. It is now GovStats: http://govinfo.library.orst.edu/index.html. [note: link no longer active as of 2007] Server was dying and the new project has been reorganized and reprogrammed, many thanks to Carrie Ottow for all her work. Databases that are now included are not represented anywhere else. Valery welcomes any suggestion or comments. New Business:OLA ConferenceThe OLA Conference is April 23-25, 2003. DIGOR’s time slot is Friday, 2:00 – 4:15. Discussion on what DIGOR’s program will be. Census? STAT USA? Someone from FBI or ALA? Decided we wanted to fill slot with post 9/11 government information. We will try to obtain a speaker for this program. If no speaker is available, Ted is willing to lead a panel discussion on the topic. Second choice was census program. DocumentOrQuestion was posed if we thought the DocumentOr had outlived its usefulness and still needed to be published or if the web page and email would suffice. Ted will still maintain the site and use it to notify us of DIGOR happenings. The membership list, minutes and perhaps Federal links will be posted and the site will offer a virtual presence. Ted will continue to maintain the site, and the issue will be turned over to Ted and Alex. Oregon Notable DocumentsDo we need to make it larger? Involve OLA? Bring State documents to librarians? Presence at OLA is important. Perhaps bring the notable documents to OLA and have members vote on the best. Winners could be posted in the OLA magazine and the DIGOR website. Vision for DIGORTom said it was important to keep track of e-archiving. Pursue Notable documents. Perhaps a meeting in January or February or at OLA in April? The Meeting was adjourned at 1:30.
