This database will contain more than 100,000 pages of personal stories, many of which are previously unpublished, rare, or hard to find. The collection presents the entire spectrum of Indian and Canadian First People experiences from their own point of view. Firsthand accounts reveal how Indians lived, thought, and fought to protect their interests; how the tribes interacted with each other and the white invaders; and how they reacted to the constantly changing and challenging situations they faced. These rare and informative biographies are supported with historical materials that provide context for the personal stories. Also included is a detailed timeline of Indian events, cross-referenced by region and tribe, to further aid in contextual placement. |

| Looking for a way to add art and literature to the library at the
same time? Graphic novels are a new breed of book, combining pictures
with text to tell their stories. Some of the best graphic novels include:
Maus, by Art Spiegelman. This novel uses cats
and mice to tell the story of a Jewish man learning about his father's
experiences in Nazi Germany. It won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992. Like traditional novels, graphic novels span all topics and styles,
and many aren't even strictly fiction. But whether you prefer
the term "comic book,\" "graphic novel,\"
or "sequential art,\" you can find something to admire
in this genre. To help support increasing academic and popular interest
in these books, we would like to begin building a substantial collection
of graphic novels in Knight Library. |

Literature from south Asia and the Indian subcontinent is a major and growing force on the global cultural scene. Within the last 20 years, North American readers have become familiar with the works of Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Jhumpa Lahiri, Rohinton Mistry, V.S. Naipaul, Amitav Ghosh, Anita Rau Badami, and many other Indian and south Asian writers. Many of these authors have won major literary awards for their work, from Roy's 1997 Booker Prize for The God of Small Things to Lahiri's 2000 Pulitzer for Interpreter of Maladies. Given that India alone supports almost a sixth of the world's population, it's no surprise that its national literature is enormous. While Western readers have easy access to the many popular works, there is a huge contingent of lesser-known writers not widely available in libraries or bookstores. Indian and south Asian literary criticism is also very hard to find, despite its importance to scholars seeking a rounded critical perspective. To provide the depth and breadth of a research-level collection, and to allow more readers access to little-known works and authors, we hope to build a signal collection of Indian and south Asian novels, poetry, drama, and criticism. |

Women's Studies |
Gerritsen Collection-Women's History Online. |
| Dutch physician Aletta Jacobs and her husband C.V. Gerritsen began collecting books and periodicals in the late 1800s. Their collection reflected the evolution of a feminist consciousness and women's rights. By the time their successors finished their work in 1945, The Gerritsen Collection was the greatest single source for the study of women's history in the world. Materials span four centuries (1543-1945) and fifteen languages, and they present the anti-feminist as well as profeminist viewpoints. The collection's curators gathered more than 4,700 publications from continental Europe, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand dating between 1543 and 1945. |
