Additional Digital Video and Audio Resources
Note also that cameras and audio equipment can be checked out from Media Services for instructional use. The Knight and Science ITCs also have digital video stations.
Software
We provide a variety of video and audio editing tools for both the Macintosh and Windows platforms, and will gladly walk you through their use. The software applications we have available include
- Adobe Premiere
Premiere has long been a standard in video editing. We have versions for the Macintosh, and Windows. Our Windows machine is augmented with a real-time Matrox video card, which allows us to do many editing tasks more quickly, without having to wait for the computer to render the transitions and special effects.
- Apple Final Cut Pro
Apple's profesional video editing package has become a major challenger to Premiere over the last few years. It offers a wide range of advanced editing features including color adjustment and animation capabilities exceeding those of Premiere. It also has excellent compatibility with our Firewire camera. We have the latest version for our G4 PowerMac editing station.
- Vegas Video
A slightly less complex package than Premiere for Windows, Vegas Video has a unique editing style that is focused more on the intergration of video with audio.
- Apple iMovie 2
Apple has changed the video market with this little application. It ships standard with most Macs now, and provides an easy, yet powerful editing tool to a consumer audience. It is ideal for most simple video capture and editing tasks.
- Apple QuickTime Pro
The full version of QuickTime allows for conversion between most formats of video, audio, and image files. It offers a wide range of compression and output options.
- Apple QuickTime VR
QuickTime VR is a technology that can be used to create interactive 3D spaces that users can navigate through and look around. It uses panoramic images to create this effect.
- Macromedia SoundEdit 16
One of the oldest and most widely used audio editing applications, SoundEdit has many simple audio editing capabilities. You can use it on our Macintosh system.
- Peak DV Audio
Peak DV is an audio application that works in conjunction with Final Cut Pro. It offers most standard audio editing features, along with the ability to view your Final Cut Pro video footage while editing, making sychronization of sound effects significantly easier.
- SoundForge
SoundForge is a powerful audio editing suite. It offers the most audio editing options of all our sound applications, and can take advantage of the real-time echo and distortion effects of our SoundBlaster Live card in our Windows editing station.
- Pristine Audio
The primary function of this Windows application is to clean up audio, by removing annoying background noise or clicks and pops for sharper sound.
- Discreet Cleaner
Editing video for the Web and CD-ROM can be a challenge. Video files can be extremely large and difficult to transfer at acceptable speeds even on fast networks on campus. Cleaner is designed to squeeze every possible bit of optimization out of video files, helping to achieve much better quality at smaller file sizes than video editing applications' default output. Plan ahead with this application, it can take several hours to perform optimization on a large video clip. We have both Macintosh and Windows versions.
Hardware
CET consulting has a 900 Mhz video editing PC with a real-time Matrox card featuring Premiere 6.0 and Vegas Video. This machine's features can create cross-dissolves and other transitions such as fades in real-time, thus eliminating the wait. The Matrox card has built in video and audio ins and outs for getting your footage straight to tape. Use this Windows machine to create great video for your instructional projects in less time!
We also provide a Macintosh video editing station, equipped with Apple's Final Cut Pro and iMovie2. iMovie offers a simple, consumer-level video editing solution that can run on any modern Macintosh. It provides an excellent solution for beginners and pros alike. If you need more advanced features, use Final Cut Pro. Synch up your sound with Peak DV, an audio application that allows you to edit the sound clips of your Final Cut Pro projects while viewing the video simultaneously.
