Rush and Expedite Cataloging Requests

UO Theses and Dissertations

UO students who write Master's theses and Ph.D. dissertations as part of their degree programs are required by the University to give a copy of the work to the Libraries. The process of receiving, archiving, and cataloging UO theses and dissertations involves many units on campus, as well as some outside vendors. Because of the number of steps in the process and the many units involved, it can sometimes take up to a year for a particular title to become available for use. (For full details on the process, click here.)

For Ph.D. dissertations written since 1998, an electronic copy is available from Bell & Howell Learning and Information. These copies are available free to UO users. To search for an electronic version, go to http://wwwlib.umi.com/cr/uoregon/main

A record for a UO thesis or dissertation first appears in the library catalog only after it has been microfilmed and the paper copy has been bound. At this point, staff of the Collection Development and Acquisitions Department create a brief bibliographic record for the title. In the public catalog the display will read "1 copy being processed for ..." If there is no record in the public catalog, it means that the work is:

Not yet received from the Graduate School, or
Not yet microfilmed, or
Not yet back from the bindery

In all cases, contact Metadata Services and Digital Projects with a rush or expedite cataloging request, as outlined on the main Rush and Expedite Cataloging Requests page.
