Resource Sharing: Borrowing Material from Other Libraries

For help:

Requesting materials from other libraries:

  1. What is ILLiad?

  2. ILLiad is the system used to request an item through UO Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Services. ILLiad is an acronym for InterLibrary Loan Internet Accessible Database. The first time you login to ILLiad you will be asked to complete a registration form.

  3. What is Summit?

  4. UO is a member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance. Summit is the borrowing program used to request items through that consortium. Summit libraries lend print items and some audio/visual materials to each other.

  5. Who is eligible to use these services?

  6. ILL: Current UO students, faculty, staff, Oregon Card holders, members of the UO Alumni Association, and UO Associates

Summit: Current UO and Summit library students, faculty, and staff

  7. How do I submit requests?

  8. From the UO WorldCat screen, search for items you want. If an item is held by Summit, request the item using the "Request Summit Item" button. If Summit libraries do not own the item, use the "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" button. Summit requests usually arrive more quickly and use fewer library resources than ILL requests.

Articles found in databases: Use the "Find Text" button.

If you have a citation and need a blank form to make your request, log into your ILLiad account, select the format of the item (book, article, etc.) and then fill out the forms.

  9. Does it cost to borrow?

  10. ILL: Students, faculty, and staff: usually, there is no charge for borrowing books and obtaining journal articles. If the lending library does charge a fee, you will be contacted before items are requested.  Oregon Card, members of the UO Alumni Association, and UO Associates:  $15 per successful request plus copyright fees and any fees charged by the lending library.  (See Interlibrary Loan Privileges for Non-UO Borrowers.)

    Summit: no fee

Overdue fines and lost item charges apply to everyone.

  11. Is there a limit to the number of requests that can be submitted?

  12. There is no set limit to the number of requests that can be submitted. However, the Library may not be able to process large numbers of transactions simultaneously from any one individual, depending upon the Library's staffing and resource levels.

Patrons who submit a high volume of requests may be referred to the appropriate subject specialist who can help clarify needs or find local materials.

Undergraduates, holders of Oregon Cards, members of the UO Alumni Association, and UO Associates are limited to five requests per day for audiovisual materials when requesting through ILL.

Please note that copyright restrictions may hinder multiple requests for articles within the same publication.

  13. How long does it take to get items?

  14. ILL print and A-V items: an average of 10 days. Items can come in as few as three days or they may take longer, depending on the location of the library from which they were requested.

ILL articles: an average of three days.

Summit: an average of four days.

  15. How do I check on the status of my request?

  16. ILL: Login to your ILLiad account. If you see "request sent" it means that UO library staff have placed the request, not that the lending library has shipped the item. Also, you can contact ILL staff at the library.

Summit: Login to your Summit Account. If the item has been received at the library, you can also login to your UO Library account.

  17. Why don't I see the ILL items I have checked out when I look into my UO Local Library Account?

  18. ILL items are checked out in ILLiad, and Summit and UO materials are checked out in the local system. Since they're two different systems you need to look in your two different accounts.

  19. How will I be notified and where will I pickup my materials?

  20. You will receive an email notice telling you where the item is being held for you, or that an electronic article is available and how you can get it.

  21. Can I renew my ILL or Summit items?

  22. Due dates for ILL items are set by the lending libraries. Log into your ILLiad account, bring up the record for the checked out item, and click on the "renew request" button.  If no renewal button appears, this item cannot be renewed. You may request a renewal seven days before the due date.

Summit loans are for either six weeks or six days (depending on the material) and no renewals area allowed. If you need a Summit item longer return the item on time and place a new Summit request.

  23. I'm a Distance Ed student or faculty. May I have ILL or Summit items mailed to my home?

Yes, you may. See the Distance Education we pages.

  24. Using Libraries When Visiting Other Locations

Northwest Christian University (NCU), Summit Libraries, and GWLA libraries: UO students, faculty, and staff who visit NCU or any of the member institutions of the Orbis Cascade Alliance (Summit) or the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA) may borrow materials from their collections according to their local policies.

ARL/OCLC libraries: Also, UO faculty planning to do research at another Association of Research Libraries-OCLC library may be issued an ARL-OCLC card which provides for free on-site borrowing at any of those libraries. Please contact the head of Access Services (chappell@uoregon.edu) or the manager of the Circulation/Reserves unit (lwilley@uoregon.edu) before you leave town.
