General Material

"General material" is defined by the format and the physical shelving location of the materal. The majority of books shelved in the open bookstacks in these libraries are considered general circulating collections.

  • Knight
  • AAA
  • Math
  • Music
  • Science
  • Law
  • OIMB
  • Documents

Most non-book formats (example: media, microfiche, some oversize collections) and reference collections either are non-circulating collections or circulate under restricted collection loan policies.

Loan periods

The loan periods for general materials is determined by the borrower category:

  • UO Faculty: six months
  • UO Graduates (including GTF and Law students): six months
  • UO Honors College Seniors and other departmental honors seniors working on term long research projects: one term
  • UO Undergraduates (including Community Education student): three weeks
  • UO Staff: three weeks
  • Other categories: three weeks

Renewals

General material may be renewed once. Borrowers may renew their own books through their library account or by telephoning (541) 346-3065.

An item might not be renewable because:

  • it's from a collection that doesn't allow renewals.
  • it has already been renewed one time. If you still need it, bring it to a Checkout Desk for checkin and staff will check it back out to you if nobody else has requested it.
  • it has a hold on it (somebody else is waiting for it). You can put a second hold on it, or try to get it through Summit.
  • it is too soon to renew. Most items can't be renewed instantly after checkout. Three month loans can be renewed seven days before the due date. Six month loan items can be renewed one month before the due date.
