The University of Oregon Libraries seeks a knowledgeable, creative, and user-oriented colleague for the position of Social Sciences Librarian for Anthropology, Sociology, and Ethnic Studies. This position provides the opportunity to participate in a wide range of services and professional responsibilities in a dynamic environment. The UO Libraries include 2.7 million print volumes and provides access to 62,359 current journal titles, 90% of which are online. The Knight Library serves the research and instructional needs of the humanities and social sciences. The Reference & Research Services Department consists of 8.0 FTE and several student assistants. The anthropology & sociology departments both offer graduate degrees. The Anthropology Department has strengths in cultural & biological anthropology, and archaeology. The Sociology Department has many foci, including gender, race & ethnicity, economics & politics, and the environment. The campus also supports a growing interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies Program.
The Social Sciences Librarian has responsibility for developing collections and services to support the substantial anthropology and sociology departments and the interdisciplinary ethnic studies program. Responsibilities include: providing in-depth reference service in a full range of humanities and social sciences; providing library and course-integrated instruction; actively promoting seminars, workshops, and classes; consulting with faculty, academic researchers, staff and students; and collaborating with library and teaching faculty on developing new methods of delivering reference, research, and instruction services. Serves on library and campus committees. The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment. Other related duties and projects as assigned. Reports to the Head of Reference & Instruction.
Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science/Studies (MLIS). Knowledge of current social sciences research issues and trends; demonstrated awareness of changing reference services environment; commitment to undergraduate learning; knowledge of current collection development issues; strong interpersonal skills; demonstrated flexibility, initiative, and problem solving abilities; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate with staff at all levels and people with diverse backgrounds.
Preferred: Experience in academic social sciences & humanities user services; substantial connection to the disciplines of anthropology, sociology or ethnic studies; faculty liaison experience; demonstrated application of information literacy standards, knowledge of educational technology issues and trends, experience with research-level collections; demonstrated campus outreach activities or creative initiatives; skills in assessment and applying new technologies; professional development activity.
$40,000 minimum. Salary beyond the minimum will be based on prior professional experience, education, and/or rank. The UO offers a generous benefits package. Librarians hold academic faculty status with rank, and are non-tenured. Contracts are fixed-term and renewable (two or three years, depending on rank). Professional growth and service in keeping with university and library standards for promotion and retention is expected.
