The University of Oregon Libraries seeks a knowledgeable, creative, and user-oriented colleague for the endowed position of Lorry I. Lokey Science Data Services Librarian. The incumbent in this newly established position will provide advanced library and information services to faculty and student researchers in the sciences, and will play a lead role in library and campus initiatives to collect, manage, and apply research data.
Data Services: Work with primary research community and other librarians to develop and sustain services for accessing and analyzing research data, with initial focus on bioinformatics and chemoinformatics. Act as liaison between campus or library initiatives and the research community to promote, facilitate, and support the development of services for collecting and archiving research data. Maintain awareness of tools and methodologies for computationally centered, data-driven science (data mining, visualization, text mining, etc.). Develop and maintain basic expertise in bioinformatics and chemoinformatics support. Build partnerships with relevant campus, state, and national data organizations.
Reference, Instruction, and Collection Development: Provide general reference services in the sciences. Provide extended assistance through consultations both in the Science Library and off-site, especially questions about data. Serve as selector for chemistry and molecular biology. Participate in classroom instruction, workshops, orientations, tours, etc. Participate in developing and teaching credit courses relating to scientific informatics, and to data management, curation, retrieval, and use. Actively promote library resources and services, and be a channel of communication between the library and faculty, students, and staff in assigned departments, including meeting with new faculty members, attending departmental meetings and seminars, and monitoring faculty and graduate student listservs.
Library, Campus, and Professional Development and Service: Manage or participate in other library activities and special projects, especially those involving new technologies and data. Develop and maintain awareness of data-centered initiatives in the sciences. Attend professional meetings, workshops and conferences for training and continuing professional development as appropriate. Participate in writing grant proposals.
The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment. Other related duties and projects as assigned. Reports to the Head, Science Library.
Required: MLIS from ALA-accredited program; excellent communication skills; superior organizational and analytical skills; subject background in life sciences and/or chemistry or equivalent experience; experience with computer and telecommunications technologies for information management. Preferred: Degree in science or related discipline; at least two years of post-MLIS experience in an academic library; experience with teaching information management and computer technologies; coursework and/or experience in bio- or chemical informatics, science data management, cyber infrastructure, data mining, molecular modeling, etc.

Librarians hold academic faculty status with rank, and are non-tenured. Contracts are fixed-term and renewable (two or three years, depending on rank). Professional growth and service in keeping with university and library standards for promotion and retention is expected.
